Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Background and Rationale

Theater has long been regarded as a powerful medium for storytelling, self-expression, and social commentary. It has the ability to captivate audiences, provoke thought, and evoke emotions. However, despite its potential for inclusivity and diversity, the theater industry has historically been plagued by a lack of representation and accessibility for marginalized communities.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need for more inclusive and equitable theatrical spaces. This shift in perspective is driven by a desire to address the systemic barriers that prevent individuals from diverse backgrounds from fully participating in and benefiting from theater. These barriers can include limited opportunities for actors of color, lack of representation for LGBTQ+ characters and stories, and physical and sensory barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from accessing theater spaces.

1.2 Research Objectives

The primary objective of this master's thesis is to explore the concept of inclusion in theater and develop a comprehensive framework for creating diverse and accessible theatrical spaces. This framework will serve as a guide for theater practitioners, educators, and policymakers to implement strategies and practices that promote inclusivity and equity within the theater industry.

To achieve the research objectives, the following questions will be addressed:

1. What is the current state of inclusivity in theater?
2. What are the barriers and challenges faced by marginalized communities in accessing and participating in theater?

1.4 Scope and Limitations

This research will focus on theater as an art form and its role in promoting inclusion. It will primarily examine the experiences and perspectives of marginalized communities, including but not limited to people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and individuals with disabilities. The research will encompass both professional and community theater spaces.

However, it is important to acknowledge that the scope of this thesis is limited to the English-speaking theater industry. While there are undoubtedly valuable insights and experiences from theater communities around the world, this research will primarily draw upon examples and case studies from English-language productions.

1.5 Methodology

This research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to gather data and analyze findings. Qualitative methods, such as interviews and focus groups, will be used to collect personal narratives and perspectives from individuals within marginalized communities.
